Saturday July 8, was the 2006 Ride for Awareness poker run. Even with the early sign-up, Wins and I managed to make it before last bike out at 11:00. In no time at all, the parking lot filled up. Many friendly people ready to ride for a good cause.
The ride was very nice. We rode through some nice scenic areas of Wicomico County. The women of Women Supporting Women (WSW) did a great job planning the run. The route was well marked and the directions were good. We had four stops at some nice places. Thanks to the owners and staff at Dillagafs, Bucks Place, Take a Break Tavern, and Red Man Lodge. Everyone was very friendly and gave us a great welcome.
It was great to see the show of support from the female biker community. Many women came out to support the cause. While talking to the women, I found a lot were there simply to support their fellow women. However, quite a few had personal reasons for being there. This was a more personal ride for me then the others. Both my Mother and Maternal Grandmother are breast cancer survivors. I know first hand the devastation fighting cancer causes. I also know it is a comfort, knowing there are people out there who care. Thanks everyone.
A highlight of the event for me was a surprise thunderstorm. This was a first for me (whew). Of course, it was a bad one too. Thunder, lightning and a whole lot of rain. A couple times, we had to stop. It was raining too hard to see. We finally came to an overpass (much to my relief) and were able to get out of the rain. We were about 5 miles from the last stop and past our return time at 2:00(lol). I would like to say a special thank you to the two women collecting signs. They were kind enough to offer me a dry ride to Red Man Lodge and with the persuasion of Wins I took them up on their offer. At the last stop, everyone was soaked and still smiling! In addition, I managed to not fall apart during my first ride in a storm.
Overall, it was a great ride. The women of WSW did a great job organizing the event. Of course, the show of support from the biker community was awesome. Again showing the great asset the biker community is when supporting a good cause.
