Ahhh... The first nice Saturday of the year! I wanted to get out and see something new on Delmarva, so I made a call down to New Church and setup an interview with Robert Windsor of Cycle Creations. I didnt expect what I was to see down there, but am I glad I went! Nothing I could write would ever capture the true enthusiasm this dude has for his work and the Delmarva Biker Scene, so here is the interview as it happened...

Winslow: Let me just get the tape rolling here...
Robert: No problem, this is something everyone seems to like. I have shirts from all over the world. Phillapines, Hawaii, these are from the first year we had the beast of the east. I had some shirts and we starting swapin with the other guys there, Milwaukee Iron, they swapped with us.
Winslow: Oh yeah, nice.
Robert: Dave Irwin gave us one and signed it... Savage Cycle guys, they gave us one and all signed it cause they were right across from us at Beast of the East. We had the bike up on the boxes, a shovelhead, a buetifull shovelhead.
Winslow: Oh yeah, I remember that.
Robert: Ill show it to you here in a bit before you leave.
Winslow: Ok.
Robert: Theres the Beast of the East shirt and all that stuff. Over here is a little bar we just built.
Roberts Wife: Its not finished yet.
Winslow: Its very nice.
Robert: We have plenty of room for all our friends and such to come over.
Winslow: Oh yeah, plenty of room for lots of people.
Robert: Just makes it better for the dinner rides, we setup all these tables and chairs for the OC crowd, we cater to em, they tell us how many people and we get all setup for em.
Winslow: Awesome.
Robert: What did we have 50 some people come down for the dinner ride?
Roberts Wife:Yeah, there were some local people too.
Robert: Yeah, we had some local people come over and meet the dinner ride from OC Harley Davidson just to come and mingle with everyone else.
Winslow: Thats nice, You could deffinately get 50 people in here.
Robert Easy. All the time. This helps give it a rustic atmosphere. We redid the whole kitchen and this area this winter, new flooring, new paint, its the rustic look that we were after.
Winslow: Family friendly.
Robert: Exactly. We make it so that anyone can come in here and feel comftorable. Thats the whole thing about it, I been into the bike thing for years and years since the 70s Im still enjoying it, more now than ever.
Winslow: With all the new things that are happening, Im having a blast with it.
Robert: Yeah, I know. Ever since he first opened up the place I been close with the guys at OC Harley Davidson, building bikes and I was up there all the time. Then people started coming to my house so I decided to open up again, I had a shop in the 80s. I built my first bike back in 72, 73, I was building bikes back then from a Triumph. I was into it before it was it.
Winslow: How long have you been at this location?
Robert: Since 2000 in this location. We were open before in the 80s here as Cycle Creations too. Weve done pretty good here. We got a big clientel here, I been into everything. I like to paint, I like to do design work, Ive done some peoples bikes, matter of fact I got a girls bike here Im doing that is pearl white with blue flames, her and her husband had an accident. They came up to a light and she went left and he went right and they ran right into each other.
Winslow: Oooh man.
Robert: They got locked together and had to be dragged apart. No one got hurt.
Winslow: Thats cool.
Robert: I thought that was kinda odd situation.
Winslow: Yeah, that is wierd.
Robert: I got a little Machine shop over here, I do my own fabrication. I got a chopper here we are getting ready to build for somebody. The full complete kit, a $14000 kit, wheel, tires, everythings right in the box. Oil tank, liscense plate bracket, the full complete kit is right there. Its a hell of a deal.
Winslow: Dam.
Robert: I got my welders here, I Mig Tig, I was a plant superintendant, I did all the work there. This is mine, I dont think Ill ever get back to it, hehe. Its gonna have a 200 tire on it, evo.
Winslow: Wow.
Robert: This is a Sportster Im doing for a guy right now. Do some welding, put a styled oil tank on for him.
Winslow: Um hm.
Robert: Just a little rustic shop you know.
Winslow: Im very impressed. Looks like you got a little bit of everything.
Robert: I do.
Winslow: Service, a little bit of everything.
Robert: Yes, I do it all myself.
Winslow: Makes it nice for you and customers.
Robert: I got a plasma cutter, Ill show you some parts I made. I cut them out, send em to get chromed. Now this Ill let you take one picture of.
Winslow: Alright.
Robert: You can see the front of the bike.
Winslow: Ok, I dont want to get you in trouble with the beast of the east guys.
(At this point, Robert gave me a sneak peek at the bike he is building for Beast of the East. I promised I wouldnt give away too much about it, so all I can say is this is ONE ROCKIN BIKE! Absofreakinglutely gorgeous with loads of very personal and specific highlights and customizations. The one pic I have is posted shows the front end. Be sure to check it out at Beast of the East, Im sure it will be one of the highlights of the show. We move back out into the resturant area at the back of his shop. The walls are lined with TShirts from all over and all kinds of events.)
Robert: People really like that, they can spend all day looking at all the places that they came from. People give us TShirts from all over, I got one from Daytona, people just got back from Daytona yesterday.
Winslow: There it is.
Robert: Its the latest new addition.
Winslow: Daytona 06 one.
Robert: Yep, we just got it. That one there came from Iraq (see picture).
Winslow: Oh my god. Yeah, no booze over there.
Robert: Nope, no beer over there at all.
Winslow: Lemme get a good shot of that.
Robert: Go for it. My friend that works here with me was in Iraq and he brought the shirt back with him. Theres Aruba, everyone knows about Aruba with that Halloway thing.
(Robert takes me in the back to show me some more of the Beast of The East Bike. One thing is very obvious - Robert takes HUGE pride in his work. He pointed out alot of the small details on the bike.)
Winslow: Oh my god this is such a sweet bike. Very cool.
Robert: I made all these peices to fit in the gastank to fit in behind it. I dremeled em out and put em in there, the blue lights will shine on em and the bike will light up. I cut all these out with the plasma cutter to go with the wheels. The name of the bike is Viscious, for Brad Solsman of Solsman construction in Berlin, I made it for him. See where the bikes name is viscious, I put these v shapes all in it. See the footrest here? I had to do some cutting to get that to fit just right, that and the plate frame. It didnt fit but I did some milling to get it to fit right.
Winslow: Wow, lots of detail. Hmmm...
Robert: I made everything fit into the bike just so. The footrest folds up and it lines up just right.
Winslow: Niice. I wanna take more pictures.
Robert: (Laughing) Shes gonna be nice when shes finished. Its got hydrolic clutch and brakes, everything has a V logo, even the shape in the handlebars. They told me the handlebars would fit, they lied to me, they didnt fit, I had to change em. I use these lines to measure the line length to get em just right, see it runs down here and goes in. I got this tiny little logo that goes in there, its polished bilet, so Im molding this in there, I did my own molding, my own painting.
Winslow: Nice work.
Robert: Thats a 127 in motor, shes gonna fly.
Winslow: I bet. Neat. So I can take one pic of the front here right?
Robert: Go for it. Future bike for beast of the east.
Winslow: Ok, go stand next to it, Let me get you standing there next to it. So this is the bike I can win at the show?
Robert: No, this is for a cutomer. Every bike builder is putting in one bike this year. Last year I had 2 of em in there. This here is a good friend of mine, Danny.
Winslow: Hey Danny.
Robert: Hes the one who brought back the Iraq shirt. He did two tours over there.
Winslow: Did ya? Wow, good to have ya back.
Robert: His dream is to build his own custom chopper, so hes working at Nasa and coming in here helping me out.
Winslow: Very cool.
Robert: We just got done building him an engine and we will be putting him together a bike here in the near future.
Winslow: Niice! Thats the best way, you will know all about it when you are done. Have some history with it.
Robert: To help out with service hes going down to school in Florida.
Winslow: AMA?
Robert:AMI. And he is doing the Daytona corespodence course while hes in here.
Winslow: I used to live in Daytona.
Danny: Oh really?
Winslow: Yeah, I spent 4 years there. Youre going to love it. The weather is awesome.
Danny: MMI is in Orlando, AMI is in Daytona.
Robert: Yeah, the VA is paying for the whole thing.
Winslow: Wow, thats great.
Robert: He got his foot tore up on the last tour.
Winslow: Oh man, are you alright?
Danny: I went through a surgery, I have to go through another one. Its messed up, but I guess it happened at the right time, you know, hooking up with bikes and everything.
Winslow: Well, some good is coming.
Danny: Oh yeah. 60 thousand dollar school, VAs paying for it all.
Winslow: Thats great man.
Danny: Thanks man.
Winslow: You are gonna love florida.
Danny: Yeah, I cant wait! Hehehe.
Robert: He aint gonna wanna come back.
(We all break out laughing.)
Winslow: First bikeweek hes gonna call ya up and say, Sorry Robert Im done. Im not coming back.
Danny: Naw, I am coming back.
Robert: If he does im going down after him.
Winslow: Bikeweek is incredible. Biggest party Ive ever been to in my life. 10 days straight of nothing but this low rumble everywhere you go. It never stops.
Danny: Really? Wow.
Robert: Delmarvas becoming a good one. Much better than the first couple of years.
Winslow: Yeah I went to I think the second one out at Whaley camp ground, kinda nasty weather, just a couple hundred people.
Robert: Yeah, they are getting the right people in there running it now. Last year they had a real good show. The weather was perfect for it most of the time.
Winslow: Yeah, I was there, I was down for the whole week staying in my moms condo.
Robert: Where did you come down from?
Winslow: Im in Delmar.
Robert: Oh ok. I got a freind of mine from Delmar, I got his bike in here on the lift doing the front end for him. His name is Dave... Ahh, shit, I cant remember his name...
Winslow: (Laughing) You got his bike and cant remember his name? (We all laugh.)
Danny: You got a bike?
Winslow: Yeah, I got a sportster, its parked out front. Yeah, its something.
Robert: I have kits for sportsters, check this out. See that? You work your motor right into the frame.
Winslow: Oh man, that is sweet!
Robert: It comes with a swing arm and a 200 wheel on the back.
Winslow: Thats very cool.
Robert: Lemme show ya the fenders for the beast of the east bike. These are them, this the same kind of wheel that is in that kit I showed you. But its a 3 spoke wheel. Its the same kit as you saw over there on the other side. I build these bikes outa that same kit. See how I did the back of the fender? Its got that V in it, I cut that whole fender shape, took a saber saw and cut it, dremeled it out and cleaned it all up. And everythings set with the V logo in it for Viscious.
Winslow: Nice, very nice. Is that the rear fender?
Robert: Ill show it to you in a second. This is last years Beast of the East bike. Its a nice bike, Im storing it for the owner. Hes having a building built.
Winslow: Oh yeah, Ive seen this before, the skull and flames.
Robert: Its got flames all over it, its got flame wheels on the front. This is another bike Im working on, you might have seen it, its in all the shows all over, its got some nice flames on it. Im going to do that pearl white with blue flames like this.
Winslow: Oh yeah, I think Ive seen this bike before. Mind if I take a picture of it?
Robert: I dont care.
Winslow: Alright. (fiddling with Camera taking a few shots) Im just trying to get a good feel for the shop and what you guys are doing here. Looks like ya got some of everything. Painting, service, custom work.
Robert: These are some big bores that broke. I got my computers over here I can reprogram the bikes with Power Cam.
Winslow: What is power cam?
Robert: Its what you use to reprogram the bikes to do whatever I want with any bike. I even handle fuel injection bikes... That is an original 71, original paint, racing stripes and everything.
Winslow: That color scheme looks very familiar. Well, Im very impressed.
Robert: This a 58 Panhead, I repainted the tank to original colors, you can get the HD logos like this. You see you stick on this peice and then these peices screw right in like original.
Winslow: Thats neat.
Robert: So it makes it look original.
Winslow: Cool. Is this last years Beast of the East Bike?
Robert: Yeah, Beast of the East last year. I thought you would recognize that if I showed it to you.
Winslow: Oh yeah...Ok.
Robert: Remember her?
Winslow: Oh yeah.
Robert: We had it up on the boards and it orange flames going on the sides that said Cody James customs. It had flames with nitros on the front.
Winslow: Ok.
Robert: Thats the other one we built. You can take pictures of that if you want, I dont care. You want me to take the cover off more?
Winslow: If you dont mind that would be great. I want to show off your work in the article.
Robert: No problem. No problem.
Winslow:Thats good. Im gonna angle it a little bit here, Ill be Artistic with it, hehehe.
Robert: There ya go. We stored it in here for him cause hes working on his building and he didnt want to store it in there till he had his buiulding right. She runs buetiful too, we rode it all around the building here.
Winslow: Dam. Very nice.
Robert: See how the frame is all put together? Alot of people dont pay attention to it. People these days like to leave the welds on em, you dont see any welds anywhere on my whole frame. Its the old fashioned way of doing it, the way I used to do my bikes years ago. I mold every spot, even that white frame, thats why it looks so clean. You look at that white frame, no welds showing anywhere.
Winslow: I like these little silver accents here.
Robert: She got little skulls all over it, remember the skulls on the pushrod tubes?
Winslow: Yeah.
Robert: Did you see the article they did in the daily times? They had my picture on the cover with the skulls right over my shoulder.
Robert: They helped me alot when they did that, right before the beast of the east.
Winslow: So you are doing good?
Robert: Im doing great! Haha. I got a website now, www.cyclecreations.net, I do some online sales and ebay stuff. Delmarva bikeweek, that last sunday we do a pig roast, this year we are going to do it on Saturday I think. People were burned out going home, think they were kinda tired. Our ABC man is going to let us rope off the parking lot, have our kegs of beer, were going to roast two pigs, a DJ, last year we had a band, we had a good time out there. We advertize it in the folder, they put it right in there for us. If you want to take a break from Bikeweek, you can take a ride on down here, buetifull ride.
Winslow: Last year, I went with a bunch of friends, umm, I think it was on Friday, we went down to Captain somethings in Chincoteague. Buetifull ride.
Robert: Captain Fishs.
Winslow: Oh yeah, thats it.
Robert: Were also gonna help Girdletree Fire Dept advertize thier bike thing. I sponsered em last year, and were doing it this year. Theyre going to help me out with a sign on 12 Cycle Creations pig roast. They do the annual Mr Whippies ride.

I spent some more time hanging out with Robert, his wife and grandson Cody Jr. Cody Jr takes after his Poppop in every way, from riding and working on his own mini - chopper to playing pool and the drums. Cycle Creations is a great stop for just about anyone, young, old, family you name it. This dude is deffinately the real McCoy and can do it all. He also mentioned if anyone ever gets stuck down his way (say south of Princess Anne) give him a shout and he will see what he can do to help you out. His shop is the last stop headed south out of Delmarva, and deffinately a must do for the Delmarva biker scene. Thanks to Robert, his wife, Danny and little Cody for taking the time out of thier busy schedules to talk to me.

See ya on the road...

Steven Winslow
